Struktur

ENGLISH

Our structure is our program

New forms of artistic expression need new and suitable places and structures of production and presentation. These places must be open, flexible and in any case developable. This applies equally to infrastructures and organizational structures and, of course, to the means. Keywords: production sites, experimental spaces.

The special structure of p.m.k. was developed with this background in mind: on the one hand a constant differentiation into the most diverse sections and areas, and on the other hand out of the necessity to be able to react flexibly and openly to the latest trends at any time. Under this perspective, the structure of p.m.k is its program.

p.m.k. is an active association of 35 cultural associations that have been active in Innsbruck for a long time. It was founded with the aim of setting up and operating a joint venue, comparable to a joint venture of lawyers or architects, and on the other hand to bundle tasks such as press and public relations work, coordination and management in a joint office.

The breadth of content and diversity is reflected in the list of members of p.m.k., which is also its particular strength: the many specialists who have special know-how in their fields and an overview of the most important current developments, and who have the best contacts to musicians, artists, agencies and theoreticians. This is something that p.m.k. has built on from the very beginning and has endeavored to involve all of these groups as intensively as possible.

Differentiation of directions and styles

It is a fact that, especially through the use of digital media from the early 00s on, there has been an unprecedented differentiation in the field of music into the most diverse directions and styles. Of course, this is not only true for music but for all artistic disciplines - the boundaries within the disciplines are fluid. Keyword: cross-disciplinary.

Another relatively new phenomenon is intense cross-genre-networking  to a much greater extent than in the 90s. Up until that time, it was primarily the various varieties of rock and jazz that were of interest to those with ambitions in music production and communication. In the 1990s, techno, hip hop, house, drum'n'bass and dozens of subgenres and fusions of these new musical genres expanded the musical field.

Implementing supraregional aspirations locally

From a local perspective, this "digital revolution" has also brought a large number of committed musicians and organizers working in these new forms to Innsbruck, many of whom have been working for years at the highest level, committed to researching music on the pulse of time and the demand for the highest possible quality, to make urban contemporary music audible in Innsbruck.

What is a matter of course in large cities such as Vienna or Berlin in numerous clubs and event centers, requires incomparably greater effort, commitment and professionalism in comparatively smaller cities with a more rural environment. But especially there, where contemporary music and the information about it is not easily available from the beginning, it is necessary to work on a constant updating and to guarantee interested people a program with a level on the top of the time or to bring the listening habits to this level, in order not to have to expose oneself to the reproach of provinciality. This is true for the active musicians and organizers, who develop here in Tyrol and not in Vienna or Berlin, but later may have to exist there, as well as for a potential audience. This is all the more difficult in a rural environment, because although one is outwardly networked and committed to an international scene, the environment must often first be convinced.

In addition to the broad range of disciplines, p.m.k.'s primary concern is to provide local musicians with initial opportunities for performance and comparison. For example, local bands or DJs usually play as opening acts or as second acts for out-of-town guests. This seems to be especially important to p.m.k.: to give local musicians not only the opportunity to perform, but also the possibility of orientation and motivation for further development by comparing them with the top bands of their genre.

p.m.k as a community of directors

There is a great cultural and artistic potential in Innsbruck. We notice this in our daily work, how great not only the young creative potential is, but also how high the productivity and the level of the network of different people, associations and collectives that has been working in the city of Innsbruck for many years. We are surprised again and again how committed these people are and how high their willingness is to get involved in society, often on a voluntary basis and at their own risk, which, especially in the case of young organizers, not infrequently results in self-supported financial losses.

In this context, too, p.m.k. has proven to be an essential driving and motivating factor, and it remains the main concern to support the associations to the best of our ability. For example, it was also possible to negotiate a lump sum with the AKM, which p.m.k pays for its member clubs. This has made it possible to relieve the member clubs of some of the burden.

The p.m.k is primarily not active as an organizer - the members forming it are. This construction guarantees a large, high-quality variety in all areas as well as an incomparable quantitative density for the program.

The p.m.k. is attractive for the members because they find good infrastructures and organizational support. The concept sees the scope of p.m.k as a service provider mainly in infrastructural, organizational and coordinative support. Initially, this was in the struggle to find the necessary location, the necessary funds, as well as in the implementation of the reconstruction and the establishment of the necessary business structures. Today, in addition to providing infrastructural and organizational support for events as a service to members, the office is increasingly focusing on joint public relations and press work. In addition to the monthly program folder, there is also this joint homepage. The concept of lean administration and the greatest possible support for the members, the guarantee of good and professional conditions and smooth organizational processes has proven itself.

The members organize the event on their own account and responsibility, using all technical and organizational structures and earning all the income from the evening, which they in turn use to cover their expenses, such as artists' fees, etc. The members are also responsible for the event. Otherwise, neither the comparatively astonishing quantitative density of the program nor the continuous maintenance of the standard would be conceivable.
